Fishing Report

6/28/15

SALT:
Lots of soggy weather this week, but a few anglers to the East had some good luck. The local Bunker pods were infested with lots of Threshers, but if you got away from them, there were Bass lingering up to 50 pounds. Tom Messina had luck on Friday with a cow over 50 coming over the rails while fishing the pods. Fluke action is still good inside the bay. There are plenty of fish biting, and having lots of action to cull out the keepers makes for a fun day. The North side of the 7 Can has been a hot spot for Frank from the shop. Using squid and spearing on Chasing Tails rigs this Thursday, he and his Brother Michael had their limit of flatties up to 23 inches. Michael and Daniella Donza headed to Shinnecock with their friend Mallory Menneci and had a great time catching seven Fluke up to 3 pounds on Friday.

FRESH:

Bring on the wet weather! The Bass are loving the rain and clouds, and are super active. Jigs, spinners, and top water lures are perfect for taking them out of their hiding spots. Westbrook Lake, and Brookwood Hall are full of life. Bass up to 3 pounds have been reported, as well as plenty of sunnies and bluegills for the kids to catch. For Trout, you want to head to West Lake or Argyle for the best action. Use spinners, doughballs and worms to lure them in. Pickerel are active at Westbrook Lake, taking spinners along the shoreline. Bill from the shop had two Picks and three Largemouth early Sunday morning in the rain at Westbrook.

SALT:
This was another great week for Fluking in the bay. Walter Rostkowski, Steven Szoldatits, and Robert Bertino were out on Wednesday and nailed their limit of Fluke up to four pounds, and seven cocktail Bluefish. Saturday, the outgoing tide provided some excellent fishing. Jason Mikes and Teddy Scarpa had seven fluke in the three to four pound range at the 90ft hole inside the inlet. Jason Muller had his limit of Fluke, up to 6 pounds 3 ounces on bucktails just West of the bridge. The Bass bite is on at the bridge, the lighthouse rips, and in front of the Coast Guard Station. David Firman and John Clark had eleven Bass on clams Saturday at the bridge. Russel Jackson and Linda Rivera had a blast at the bridge on Sunday, bringing up nine Stripers, seven Bluefish, and two Fluke during the incoming tide. Frank Marrow landed a beautiful 40 pound 9 ounce Striper on Saturday evening, that were caught on the Bunker pods that just moved into the ocean. Lots of fish in the 30 to 40 pound range swallowing whole live Bunker.

FRESH:

Largemouth season is now open! This weekend, Bill from the shop and his friend Will Ganshaw headed to Brookwood Hall and had two Bass each. Will had the biggest, at 2 pounds 9 ounces. Jason Mark had luck at Westbrook Lake early Sunday morning, using a Live Target frog bouncing off the lily pads, and landed an impressive 3 pounder. Trout action is still good during the mornings and evenings due to the still chilly weather. Doughballs, worms and spinners are the choice baits. Jake Clemens had two Browns and a Rainbow at Argyle on spinners Sunday morning.

SALT:
What a week of fishing! Bluefish, Bass, Porgy, Weakfish, and Fluke coming over the rails left and right. Ralph Ranghelli came in with an impressive 3 pound 12 ounce Porgy that he grabbed from the Peconic on Wednesday. Rob Steward, Scott Ellinghaus, and Chris Karppi were on Fluking on Thursday and nailed some Fluke up to 4 pounds. Frank from the shop had a beautiful 6.5 pound Weakfish on a pink bucktail, a 23 pound Bass, as well as a limit of Fluke. Friday, Roger and Ed had 9 Blues at buoy 36 on spoons and chunks. John Lotz had two Weakfish up to 8 pounds on red jelly worms on the top of the incoming tide. Jason Unger had his limit of Fluke in the State Channel while using live killies and squid. Jim DiAlesio had his limit of Fluke up to 8 pounds using live killies as well. Saturday, Rob Raprisada nailed a 6 pound Fluke on the south side of the bridge. "Speedy" and fishing partner Danguole Salsedo managed some beautiful Weakfish, weighing in at 8 pounds 4 ounces, and 7 pounds 12 ounces, respectively.

FRESH:

Lots of nice Trout are still being caught at West Lake, Argyle Lake, Bubbles Falls and Rattlesnake Creek. Doughballs, spinners, and red wigglers have been providing the best consistent action. Clarke Ganshaw had two Browns over 16 inches and a 18 inch Rainbow early Sunday morning at Argyle. Pickerel are still hitting hard along the shorelines. Shiny lures, especially spinners will pull them out of their hiding places. Bill Zekrom had a beautiful 24 inch Pick on Saturday morning at Westbrook on a gold spinner.

SALT:
Bluefish have come in heavy this week and infested the bay. Tackle busters left and right from the boats, docks, and beaches. Mike Lapine and Ike Nelson had nine Blues up to 10 pounds Thursday night, having a great time at West Sayville dock with friends. Bill Steen was also lucky that evening at the dock, taking home 6 bruisers up to 12 pounds that hit Bunker chunks. Even the young ones are getting in on the incredible action. 7 year old Anthony Elefante was fishing with his Father and Cousin Mike who is home from Iraq (thank you Mike!) and nailed Blues up to 10 pounds. 8 year old Mike "Rocky" Johnson was fishing with Dad in Nichol Bay and smashed up some 8 pound Blues. A few Weakfish have been caught, which is a good sign for things to come. Tim Rousseau had an amazing Thursday morning, when he caught a beautiful 6 pound 12 ounce Weakfish. Stripers should be moving in soon with the warmer water. A few have been grabbed in the inlet, not many of keeper size, however.

FRESH:

Warmer weather means warmer water...and that means more fish! Bass season may be closed until June, but there are several other species roaming the waters. Pickerel are out taking spinners, move them along the shore line and keep it slow. Will and Clarke Ganshaw hit Argyle Lake early Sunday morning for some Trout and came back with two Browns over 17 inches and a 15 inch Rainbow. White Perch are still very active in the Connetquot and Carmen's Rivers, taking jigs and worms. There are some monsters around.

SALT:
Warm weather is bringing the water temperature ever close to that magic number 50. Bass action in the bay has increased, especially on the North side. Some anglers on the beaches are pulling in some decent schoolies. The dock fishing has gotten better every day, with most anglers using bunker chunks to bring in the Bass. Bluefish should be soon behind them. Flounder fishing is still hit or miss, but those that hit are using a good amount of chum. Don't forget to bring a pole to beat the mud up to increase catches. Cod reports are getting better every day. Captain Jimmy Hahn landed some monsters on his birthday. Sunday, James DiAlesio brought home his limit of Cod up to 32 pounds.

FRESH:

The warm weather is increasing activity throughout the sweet water. Bass and Pickerel are biting topwater lures and Senko worms. Nightcrawlers are always a good backup. Trout are being caught at Argyle Lake, Rattlesnake Creek, and West Lake. Wax worms, Red Wigglers and spinners are popular. White Perch of good size are still holding over in the local rivers. John Lotz brought in some beautiful Perch over 2 pounds a few times this week. Jigs and worms are the best baits for them.

SALT:
Despite it being early in the season and the chilly water, Striper action keeps heating up at the local docks. Bunker chunks seem to be the bait of choice, although some nice schoolies have been caught on clam. Cameron K. nailed a nice 22 inch Bass on Saturday while fishing with clam on a Flounder rig. Stranger things have happened! Oakdale Sportsman's Club Flounder Tournament was Sunday and the winner was Frank Marro with the only fish of the day! Nice work bud! Cod fishing is slowing up, but still a fun time with a few coming up around 20 pounds, with some decent Pollock in the mix.

FRESH:
It's been windy, but the fish are still biting. White Perch can be had in almost any brackish water, with the Carmen's River being the best spot still. Grab some jigs and worms, and you're all set to catch 'em up. For Trout, head to West Lake, Argyle Lake, or Massapequa Reservoir for good action. Smaller baits are best right now; use Wax Worms, Mealworms, or Red Wiggers and little spinners. A few Bass, along with some Pickerel have hit top water lures in the local lakes.
